Summer School 2018

The I.S.E.O Summer School 2018 was held from the 21st of June until the 30th of June in the beautiful city of Iseo (Northern Italy) at the Iseolago Hotel. This year the Summer School gathered together 61 participants from 24 different countries and 49 universities around the world.

The I.S.E.O Summer School was organised for the 15th time and the macro-theme of this year’s edition was “Challenges and Opportunities in a Shifting Global Economy”, related to international economy: global market changes and trends, the rapid growth of emerging and developing economies, fiscal stability as well as labour issues and many other themes connected to the most topical debate.
Nationalities 2018

To enlighten the class of 2018 on the content of this topic, ten internationally acknowledged speakers were invited to hold lectures. First of all, three Nobel Laureates: Robert Engle (New York University, Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences 2003), Robert Merton (MIT, Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences 1997) and Michael Spence (New York University, Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences 2001). At the I.S.E.O Summer School 2018 were present also other outstanding economists and speakers: Carlo Cottarelli (visiting professor at the Bocconi University and director of the Observatory of Public Finances of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Milano), Andrés Rodríguez-Pose (professor of economic geography at the London School of Economics), Haihong Gao (director and professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences), Gaël Giraud (professor at the University of Paris 1 – Sorbonne), Kamiar Mohaddes (University of Cambridge), Christian Dustmann (professor at the University College London) and Emanuele Ferragina (Sciences Po).

During the I.S.E.O Summer School 2018 the participants also joined the international public conference promoted together with the University of Brescia in honour of Franco Modigliani, the founder of the I.S.E.O Institute. The 51st international conference in memory of Franco Modigliani was titled “Franco Modigliani’s Legacy in the World Economy” and it featured Robert Merton, Robert Engle, Marco Pagano (University of Naples Federico II) and Gianni Amisano (Federal Reserve Board) as speakers. At the conference there was more than 200 people in the audience.

In addition, three of the I.S.E.O Summer School participants had the unique opportunity to present their own research in “Your lecture” sessions in front of the Nobel Laureates, the lecturers and the other Summer School participants. This year the “Your lecture” presentations were given by Alejandra Olivares Rios (London School of Economics) from Peru, Tatja Karkkainen (University of Glasgow) from Finland and Daniela Rivero Bryant (Tulane University) from the United States.

However, the I.S.E.O Summer School is not only about lectures, studying and learning. The Summer School participants have the opportunity to network, talk and interact with the Nobel Laureates, lecturers and other participants. During the Summer School the participants enjoyed also their free time by spending time by the Iseolago hotel poolside, kayaking, tasting Italian delicacies and exploring the city of Iseo and its surroundings. This year the I.S.E.O Summer School also organised couple of excursions to the astonishing cities of Brescia and Verona. One of the highlights of the I.S.E.O Summer School is the annual gala dinner which is held at the prestigious Berlucchi winery where the participants also received their I.S.E.O Summer School diplomas.

To conclude, the I.S.E.O Summer School 2018, as its previous editions, was an unforgettable experience. During the Summer School, the participants did not only deepen their knowledge in economics, but also created long-lasting memories and friendships.
