The I.S.E.O. Institute and the Faculty of Education Sciences of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore hosted a Lectio Magistralis by James J. Heckman, Nobel Laureate in Economics 2000, on Monday, 15 June 2026, at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Brescia.
The event, which was sold out, attracted a large audience of students, academics, educators, policymakers, and members of the local community.
During his keynote lecture, entitled “Education Power: The Transformative Power for Economy and Society”, Professor Heckman explored how strategic investments in early childhood education can serve as a powerful driver of social mobility, human development, and long-term economic growth.
Widely regarded as one of the world’s most influential economists, Professor Heckman presented findings from his pioneering research on early childhood development. Drawing on evidence from economics, psychology, and neuroscience, he illustrated how the foundations of learning are established long before children enter formal schooling. His research has demonstrated that high-quality early childhood programmes for disadvantaged children can generate significant long-term benefits for individuals and society, while producing substantial economic returns.
The event opened with greetings from Elena Beccalli, Rector of Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, followed by an introduction by Domenico Simeone, Dean of the Faculty of Education Sciences.
The lecture offered a unique opportunity for attendees to engage with one of the leading voices in contemporary economics and to reflect on the crucial role of education in shaping more inclusive and prosperous societies.
