Speakers

Angus Deaton

Nobel Laureate in Economics

2015

The I.S.E.O. Institute was honoured to hold a Lectio Magistralis by prof.  Angus Deaton, Nobel Laureate in Economics 2015,  on Thursday the 24th June 2021.

The event, promoted together with the Faculty of Economics and Managament of the University of Brescia, was streamed online on Youtube, due to the restrictions to international mobility following the Covid-19 pandemic. More than 150 participants from all over the world were connected live to the Lectio Magistralis, which was focused on prof. Deaton’s latest researchs.

In their recent book Deaths of despair and the future of capitalism (in italian Morti per disparazione e il futuro del capitalism, Il Mulino), Anne Case and Angus Deaton documented how the world of working class Americans has been disintegrating over the last half century, with falling wages, falling attachment to the labor force, falling marriage rates, rising morbidity and addiction, and rising “deaths of despair”, deaths from suicide, drug overdoses, and alcoholic liver disease. The one third of the labor force with a college degree is not experiencing these problems. During the Covid pandemic in 2020, educational inequalities in mortality persisted, while racial and ethnic inequalities were renewed. As pointed out in the Lectio Magistralis, the reversal of these old and new inequalities is an urgent task.

The Lectio Magistralis was organized during the week of the I.S.E.O. Summer School 2021 entitled “The Post Pandemic World Economy”. For further details on the I.S.E.O. Summer School you can consult the specific webpage.
